Define key events

Decide which actions matter: form submissions, calls, purchases, sign-ups. Mark only the meaningful ones as key events.

Use Google Tag Manager

GTM makes tracking changes faster and safer without editing website code each time.

Essential settings

A few settings are often missed.

  • Set data retention to match business needs and privacy requirements
  • Exclude internal traffic
  • Link Google Ads and Search Console
  • Set up cross-domain tracking where needed

Validate regularly

Use DebugView and compare GA4 numbers with your CRM or store. Tracking breaks silently when websites change.

Create a measurement specification

Document each event name, trigger, required parameters, purpose and validation method. Define what counts as a successful form submission rather than recording every submit-button click. For purchases, confirm transaction identifiers, currency and value handling so retries do not duplicate revenue. Keep personally identifiable information out of event names, page URLs and parameters.

Choose data retention and access permissions around legitimate business needs, applicable privacy requirements and internal policy, rather than automatically selecting the longest possible duration. Consent requirements depend on visitor location and the tools used. Configure consent handling before enabling optional tracking, and verify both accepted and declined states.

Test complete journeys, not isolated tags

Use a real test journey from arrival to successful completion, including validation failures and repeat submissions. Confirm that the intended events appear once and that no private form values enter analytics. Repeat checks after changing forms, payment flows or consent tools. Differences between analytics and business systems are normal because attribution, consent and processing rules differ; explain those differences instead of forcing totals to match.
