Be wary of guarantees

No agency controls search algorithms or ad auctions. Promises of guaranteed rankings or specific revenue are a red flag.

Ask about process

A good agency can explain exactly how they will audit, plan, execute and report — and what they need from you.

Questions worth asking

Use these during discovery calls.

  • Who will actually work on our account?
  • Who owns the ad accounts and data?
  • How do you report and how often?
  • What happens if results are below expectations?

Ownership and transparency

You should own your ad accounts, analytics, website and content. Transparent agencies are comfortable with that.

Compare proposals on the same basis

Ask each agency to separate management fees from advertising spend, production costs, software and other external charges. Compare the agreed deliverables, ownership arrangements, reporting cadence and exclusions rather than the headline fee alone. A lower quote with limited implementation may not cover the same work as a more complete proposal.

Ask for a clear explanation of how priorities are chosen and what happens when access, approvals or sales feedback are delayed. Request evidence for any claimed experience, but recognise the difference between a permissioned client case study and an illustrative sample. A sample can demonstrate thinking; it should never be presented as proof of results.

Agree a healthy handover from the start

Keep your business as the owner of its domains, website, advertising accounts and analytics. Provide role-based access instead of sharing passwords. Confirm what is delivered when an engagement ends, including creative assets, documentation, configuration and data exports where applicable. Written scope, realistic expectations and regular review meetings are more valuable safeguards than a promise of guaranteed growth.
